Can't submit my return. Authentication error message 1046

The error message received from HMRC indicates your Gateway ID and password you have provided are not recognised by HMRC or your account has been temporarily blocked by HMRC if you have made repeated attempts to file in a short period of time or you have not yet activated the Self Assessment service on your Gateway account.

If you have made repeated failed attempts then you will need to wait 2 hours for the HMRC block to be lifted.

Please:

1. Log out of GoSimpleTax, this clears the Gateway ID and passsword you have entered.

2. Clear your browsing history/cache or open a new tab with private browsing.

3. Check you are using the correct ID and password by logging in to your HMRC Gateway account. (Type in the Gateway ID and password, do not use copy and paste)
When logged in check that your UTR is shown on the screen (see below) and you can see the Self Assessment section, if showing then please log out of the HMRC Gateway account then re-try your submission.

If your UTR is not shown please move to step 4.

If you have not logged in to your Gateway account for 3 years then HMRC will have deleted the account. You will need to therefore create a new account (new ID and password), once created link this to your self assessment accont as shown in step 4.

4. If you are not able to see your UTR look for the section called 'services you can add' and click here and choose Self Assessment You will then be sent to a screen that looks like:

Click Activate your Self Assessment and follow the onscreen prompts. HMRC will then send you an activation code via post, once received you will need to use this to activate the service.

Once activated wait a further 48 hours for HMRC to enable the service so you can file your tax returns.

Please note that if you are filing tax returns for multiple people then you will need each persons Gateway ID and password to complete the submissions for them.

If you are having difficluties then you may need to contact HMRC Online Servies helpdesk details are here.
