Change to CGT rates from 30 October 2024

Change to CGT rates from 30 October 2024

On your SA302 tax calculation breakdown, capital gains are shown as subject to a tax rate of 10%. This doesn't include the change made by HMRC (taking effect from 30th October 2024) whereby capital gains would switch to the increased 18% tax rate.

You will therefore need to manually make the adjustment in Box 51 as the calculation will not have separate rates shown.

If you refer to the CGT help notes for Box 51, you'll find there are additional notes at the end of the PDF relating to this: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/67e1612564220b68ed6a7009/SA108-Notes-2025.pdf

The following link may also be of assistance to calculate the adjustment required:

To fill Box 51 in the software:

1) Click '+ GAIN' on the right hand side

2) Select the 'Adjustment to Capital Gains Tax' category and fill in Box 51

To calculate the figure to enter into Box 51, please follow the guide below:
- Let's suppose your capital gains tax liability is £1000.
- You'll need to calculate the tax rate at 18% and 10%, then find the difference

£1000 @ 18% = £180
£1000 @ 10% = £100

£180 - £100 = £80 which is what will go in Box 51
