I live overseas how do I apply for HMRC Gateway ID?

Before starting this process you must have the following:
  1. Smart phone with internet access
  2. National insurance number
  3. Passport with biometric chip
If you don't have all of the above, you will not be able to complete registration and must contact HMRC directly.

1) Click the link below to get started on your mobile phone or smart device:

2) Click 'Create sign in details' under the subheading 'New users of Government Gateway'.

3) Proceed through the steps by entering your email address, creating a password etc.

4) Following this, HMRC will then provide you with a 12 character long code - this will be your Government ID. This is important to keep note of as this will be used as your username to login.

5) Select the 'Individual' option

5) You'll be prompted to answer some security questions which will include verification via text message, phone call or an authentication app, followed by confirming your full name, National Insurance number/address and date of birth.

6) Choose to get your access codes by Authenticator app for smartphone or tablet

7) You should then proceed to set up the authentication using an app of your choice

8) Once you have completed step 7, you will be asked to enter your National Insurance number and then confirm your identity. If you do not have a national insurance number, you will need to contact HMRC as this is required to continue.

If you have successfully entered your National Insurance number, you MUST use option 1 if you are non-resident:

9) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete this task, firstly by stating you are using your smart phone:

10) Choose which smart phone device you are using and press continue:

11) Confirm you have your valid passport to hand:

12) Confirm your passport has the biometric chip (if it doesn't you must contact HMRC directly to continue registering your account)

13) Following the above, you will be asked to use the GOV ID check app where you will be required to scan your passport and your face to proceed:

14) Once you have passed the checks, you will have access to your account and you should be able to use these details to submit your tax return
After proceeding through all of these steps, you'll have successfully created your HMRC Government Gateway ID.
