With the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) by HMRC from April 2026 we have taken the decision to introduce the need for all users to file their self assessment tax returns using their own Gateway ID and password from March 2024 onwards.
In addition to this HMRC have recently announced a move to restrict access to their self assessment telephone helpline with the aim of moving more support to digital channels online, for some of these you will need a Gateway ID to access them.
Whilst the vast majority of users already have a Gateway ID and will not be affected by this change we appreciate this may impact some users so we have put together a number of
help articles.
By making this change in March 2024 it will give those users without a Gateway ID to apply for one well in advance of the 31 January 2025 self assessment deadline.
Once you have a Gateway ID and use this for making your self assessment submission then you will receive email confirmation direct from HMRC, you will be able to login to HMRC and also see key information about your tax affairs.
Below is a list of HMRC services that can be accessed with your Gateway ID via the HMRC website or mobile app.
